The Seven Shoe Staples Every Girl Should Own

23 Feb

I’ve done previous posts on what to wear if you don’t wear heels and the shoe trends I’m wearing right now, but I figured it was time to get back to basics. It’s not often that being practical can be this fun, so let’s jump right in.

1. A great pair of boots. For the most versatile pair, look for something that hits just under or about 2” below your knee and is fairly snug around your calf. This way you can either pull them OVER a pair of skinny jeans/leggings or put them UNDER a pair of boot cut or wider leg pants. Another way to make them as wearable as possible is to find a pair in black, camel or cognac color. Heel height is up to you. Do keep in mind what you are going to be wearing them with and proportion when picking. I like heels and am on the shorter side, so I tend to go with a mid-height heel in smooth black leather. That way they are comfortable enough to wear to a concert, but polished enough to go with my work attire. Something like what is shown below is ideal.

2. A classic black pump. A chic black pump will take you from a day in the office to a night on the town with ease. Even the non-heel wearers should have this one on hand for those special occasions. It will literally go with almost everything. It looks polished enough for a job interview, sleek enough for a wedding reception, and yet still sexy enough for that slinky dress you want to wear out on Friday night. If you live somewhere chilly, go with a closed-toe pair. If you live in a more temperate climate, peep toe is okay too. Check out the one below for an idea of what I’m talking about.

3. A chic ballet flat. Even stiletto wearers like myself need to give our feet a break now and then. That’s where a chic ballet flat comes in. It’s a nice way to look polished and pulled together and still be able to walk to do errands during lunch at work or see the sights on vacation. It even works as a post workout shoe with a pair of yoga pants. There are pairs that are preppy-cute or rock and roll fierce. Pick a versatile pair that fits your personality and you can’t go wrong. I have been really digging the pair shown below.

4. Tennis shoes that are fun & sporty. I’m not talking about the cleats you wear to play softball or the sneakers you throw on for a game of basketball. I’m referring to the pair you put on with a cute pair of capris while on vacation somewhere sunny. I’m talking about the pair you throw on to walk the dog when you know you’re about to run into your cute next door neighbor. I’m talking about the pair you run to Target in when you might meet a potential client. This is your FUN pair of sneakers. See below.

5. A shoe that matches your skin tone. A skin-toned shoe lengthens the leg and creates an uninterrupted line. What girl doesn’t want legs that go on forever? Lady-like yet seductive, it fills in whenever you can’t find anything else that matches an outfit. This one below is ideal for light skinned beauties. It also comes in a nice chocolate color for dark skinned lovlies.

6. A shoe as bright as you are. This feisty number is the shoe you want when an outfit needs a pop of color. It’s also the one you should snag if YOU are needing a little lift in your day. This is your happy heel or fun-time flat. Red is a good color choice that goes with a wide variety of outfits, but cobalt blue works too if that’s more your color scheme. Pick one that makes you smile when you look at…it should uplift your spirits on sight. The pair below makes ME happy; find the one’s that work for you.

Aldo Doyscher, Zappos, $80

7. And last, but certainly not least, is a classic Wellington or Rainboot. Maybe it’s not as exciting as the rest of the list, but it will save all the others from ruin, so don’t underestimate this useful boot. And the great news is these boots have gotten a seriously fun update. You can find pairs in everything from a rubber ducky print to checkers to classic black. My personal pair look like motorcycle boots. A cozy pair of Wellingtons socks will keep you warm and dry. Look below! There’s even a zebra print pair!

LAUREN by Ralph Lauren Rossalyn II, Zappos, $54.99

It was really hard to keep this list to just seven. Since we are still in the winter months, I didn’t add a fun pair of sandals or flip flops to this list, but they deserve an honorable mention.

Have any other honorable mentions you want to add? Questions? Clothing concerns? I’d be happy to find picks in your budget range or style if the above don’t hit the mark. Comment below or send me an email to I’d also love to hear what you’d like me to write about. I’m always looking for inspiration and suggestions.
